LG Direct Drive Technology

LG's Direct Drive motor is reliable, but error codes can still occur. Most common issues are related to water supply, drainage, or load balance - often easy to fix yourself!

Drainage Errors

OE - Drainage Error (Most Common!)

What It Means

The washing machine cannot drain water within the allotted time.

Common Causes

  • Clogged drain filter (most common!)
  • Kinked or blocked drain hose
  • Blocked drain pump
  • Clogged standpipe

DIY Fixes

  1. Clean the drain pump filter:
    • Locate filter access panel (front bottom)
    • Place towels and shallow container underneath
    • Open panel and pull out drain hose (if present)
    • Drain water into container
    • Unscrew filter and remove debris
    • Check pump impeller behind filter
    • Clean and reinstall
  2. Check drain hose isn't kinked
  3. Ensure drain hose height is 60-90cm
  4. Test standpipe drainage with bucket of water

When to Call a Professional

If filter is clean but machine still shows OE, the drain pump motor may be faulty.

Water Supply Errors

IE - Inlet (Water Supply) Error

What It Means

Water isn't filling the machine properly.

DIY Fixes

  1. Check water taps are fully open
  2. Inspect inlet hoses for kinks
  3. Clean inlet filter screens:
    • Turn off taps
    • Disconnect hoses from machine
    • Remove mesh filters with pliers
    • Rinse and replace
  4. Check water pressure in house

When to Call a Professional

If water supply is good but IE persists, the inlet valve needs replacement.

Balance Errors

UE / uE - Unbalanced Load

Understanding LG's UE vs uE

  • uE (lowercase): Machine is trying to balance the load - wait
  • UE (uppercase): Balance failed - needs intervention

DIY Fixes

  1. Open door and redistribute clothes evenly
  2. Add or remove items to balance weight
  3. Don't wash single heavy items alone
  4. Check machine is level (adjust feet)
  5. Restart spin cycle

When to Call a Professional

Frequent UE errors with normal loads indicate worn shock absorbers or suspension rods.

Door Errors

dE / dE1 / dE2 - Door Error

Variations

  • dE1: Door not closed
  • dE2: Door switch/lock error

DIY Fixes

  1. Open and close door firmly
  2. Check for items caught in door seal
  3. Inspect door latch mechanism
  4. Power reset the machine

Motor Errors

LE / LE1 - Motor Locked Error

What It Means

The Direct Drive motor is overloaded or locked.

Common Causes

  • Overloaded drum
  • Items caught between drum and tub
  • Rotor position sensor fault
  • Motor wiring issue

DIY Checks

  1. Reduce load size
  2. Check if drum spins freely by hand
  3. Look for small items that may have fallen between drum and seal
  4. Power reset

When to Call a Professional

If drum spins freely but LE persists, hall sensor or motor control issue needs diagnosis.

CE - Current Error

What It Means

Motor drawing too much or irregular current.

Usually requires professional repair. Could be motor, control board, or wiring issue.

Sensor Errors

PE - Water Level Sensor Error

What It Means

The pressure sensor (water level sensor) is malfunctioning.

DIY Check

The pressure hose may be blocked or kinked. Professional access usually required.

tE - Temperature Sensor Error

Water temperature sensor faulty. Requires professional repair.

Other Common Errors

FE - Overflow Error

What It Means

Too much water in the drum - overflow detected.

Common Causes

  • Faulty inlet valve (won't close)
  • Pressure switch issue
  • Control board fault

Turn off water supply and call for repair.

PF - Power Failure

What It Means

Power was interrupted during the cycle (common during load shedding!).

DIY Fix

Simply press Start/Pause to resume or select a new cycle. Not a fault.

Sud / Sd - Suds Detected

DIY Fix

  1. Wait - machine will try to reduce suds
  2. Run extra rinse cycle
  3. Use less detergent next time
  4. Use HE (High Efficiency) detergent

AE - Leak Sensor Error

What It Means

Water leak detected in the base of the machine (similar to Bosch E15).

DIY Check

  1. Turn off and unplug machine
  2. Check for visible leaks
  3. Tilt machine to drain water from base
  4. Let dry overnight

When to Call a Professional

If AE returns, there's an ongoing leak that needs professional diagnosis.
